ALEXANDRIA, Virginia & WASHINGTON—The National Alliance for Care at Home (the Alliance) and the Research Institute for Home Care (the Institute) released the 2025 Hospice Chartbook. The chartbook provides a look at the patients being served in hospice, who they are demographically and clinically, and more.
Now in its second year, the 2025 Hospice Chartbook, cosponsored by the Alliance, provides an overview of national patient and workforce data with an emphasis on state-specific information and trends, including key data on hospice patients and providers, as well as Medicare spending on hospice and other areas of home health.
“The 2025 Hospice Chartbook offers one of the most comprehensive and timely views of hospice today—who is receiving care, how the benefit is used and the impact it has on patients and families,” said Jennifer Sheets, Alliance CEO and president of the Institute. “This is the first in a series of Institute research reports cosponsored by the Alliance to illuminate the full care-at-home landscape, with home health and Medicaid HCBS analyses to follow.”
Some key findings from the report include:
- 31% of hospice stays are a week or less, 26% were eight to 30 days and 29% were 31 to 179 days.
- 56% of all Medicare hospice claims are fulfilled in the user's home.
- Since 2019, the number of active hospice providers has increased by 1,899.
“Care at home is preferred by patients and families, increasingly high-tech and saves our health care system money,” Sheets said. “We know it is part of the solution to fortify the future of health care, serve our aging population and combat a diminishing Medicare trust fund. Data like what is included in the Hospice Chartbook is critical to ensuring the public, policymakers and providers understand our current state and where we can go.”
On Thursday, March 5 at 2 p.m. ET, the Alliance and the Institute will host a webinar on the Hospice Chartbook findings alongside data from the soon-to-be-released 2025 Hospice Facts & Figures report from the Alliance. This webinar will share data and insights impacting the hospice community. Registration is open now through the Alliance website.
