GLENS FALLS, N.Y., June 27, 2013—Capstone Medical Products Group Inc. is offering HME/DME providers the opportunity to test their Air Suspension Mattress at no cost, perhaps leading to exclusive patent protected product sales territory and/or ownership. The Air Suspension Mattress (ASM) was conceived by a registered nurse and designed by an engineer. The complete medical device includes a specially designed mattress co-branded by Tempur-Pedic Medical and a specially designed disposable drawsheet with an attached waste collection plastic bag. Three U.S. utility patents have been recently issued for the complete medical device. Additionally, the device has a U.S. issued design patent. A European patent is also pending for the complete medical device.

The ASM’s unique capability to continuously suspend a patient’s buttock/sacrum area over air allows capillaries in this area to be 100 percent open which could result in totally unrestricted blood flow within this area. By comparison, the average interface pressures in the buttock/sacrum area provided by both Group 2 mattresses and air fluidized mattresses is only slightly below capillary closing pressures. Consequently, capillaries are significantly compressed, which results in severely restricted blood flow within the buttock/sacrum area.

The extraordinary pressure ulcer healing and prevention capabilities of the ASM, which greatly exceed all other support surfaces, are explained by Poiseuille’s Law: blood flow in small blood vessels is directly proportional to the radius of the capillaries raised to the fourth power. When the ASM increases the blood vessel radius from 25 to 100 percent open, blood flow is increased by a factor of four raised to the fourth power. This increases blood flow by 256 times. All of this extra 256x blood flow volume represents natural, unrestricted blood flow that is utilized by the body to maximize all of the wound healing processes.

The ASM includes a critically sized 10” long x 5.5” wide x 8” deep cavity that encompasses the sacrum, coccyx, ischium and perineal area. The combination of the cavity and critical mattress physical properties allows the ASM to provide continuous zero pressure, shear and friction for the critical buttock/sacrum area. Additionally, when the plastic bag is inserted into the mattress cavity, the patient’s fecal and urine wastes are collected into the plastic bag. Thus, there is essentially 100 percent separation between the patient’s skin and their fecal and urine waste.

The combination of unrestricted blood flow and 100 percent separation between the patient’s skin and their fecal and urine waste establishes the ASM both as an extraordinarily effective pressure ulcer healing and prevention product and incontinence management product. Key design aspects of the mattress physical properties follow:
• The Tempur-Pedic material exhibits fluid like properties for effective force dispersion and the elimination of iso-pressure points.
• The Tempur-Pedic material is uniquely firm and dense enough not to collapse at the mattress cavity while being fluid enough to provide extraordinary patient comfort.
• The combination of the Tempur-Pedic material enveloping features and the mattress cavity significantly stabilizes patients on the ASM. Boosting patients on the ASM is generally only required about every six to 12 hours.
