WASHINGTON--On Wednesday, the Senate unanimously confirmed Bill
Corr as deputy secretary of Health and Human Services. He fills the
No. 2 spot at the department and will work with newly sworn-in HHS
Secretary Kathleen Sebelius as the national debate on health reform
heats up.
President Barack Obama nominated Corr for the position in January,
before former South Dakota Sen. Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination
for the top HHS post. Corr had previously served as Daschle’s
chief counsel and policy director.
Corr has also been executive director for the Campaign for
Tobacco-Free Kids and was HHS chief of staff during the Clinton
administration.
“Bill Corr’s policy expertise and management experience
will be invaluable as we work together to manage the Department and
pass and implement comprehensive health reform,” Sebelius
said in a statement.
Dr. Yvette Roubideaux was also confirmed as administrator of the
Indian Health Service. A member of the Rosebud Sioux tribe,
Roubideaux served most recently as an assistant professor at the
University of Arizona College of Medicine. She has conducted
extensive research on American Indian health issues, including
diabetes.
