The two senators introduced the Veterans Homecare Choice Act to reinstate veterans’ access to homecare professionals operating as independent contractors

Due to labor shortages, veterans in Florida, Alabama and across the country are struggling to find at-home health care providers. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has chosen to exclude nurse registries in the Community Care Network (CCN), which would qualify these caregivers for reimbursement. The VA’s arbitrary decision to exclude nurse registries only exacerbates the existing labor shortage in this critical field. 

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 11, 2022)—The Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Office of Geriatrics and Extended Care is expanding its Home-Based Primary Care, Medical Foster Home and Veteran-Directed Care programs to make them available at all VA medical centers (VAMC) by the end of fiscal year 2026.

VA will add 58 medical foster homes and 70 veteran-directed care programs to VAMCs across the nation and add 75 home-based primary care teams to areas with the highest unmet need.
