WASHINGTON—The National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation (NPHI)—a membership association of more than 120 nonprofit, community-based hospice and advanced illness care providers across the United States—announced a new online care locator tool and toll-free number aimed toward helping those grieving the loss of a loved one this holiday season. NPHI’s new resources are designed to provide free access to local grief support services ranging from bereavement counseling to support groups, spiritual support and other resources to help individuals and families cope with loss.
NPHI said a recent survey found that 61% of Americans anticipate feeling sad or lonely over the holidays, and 43% of those cite grief as a significant factor.
“Grief doesn’t take a holiday, and neither does support,” said Tom Koutsoumpas, founder and CEO of NPHI. “The holiday season may shine a spotlight on family and laughter, but for so many, it underscores what’s missing. Our members are committed to stepping in—with a kind voice, a group connection or just someone to reach out to—because no one should have to face grief alone.”
Hospice and advanced illness care providers focus not only on the medical needs of patients with serious illness but also on the emotional and social well-being of both patients and their families. NPHI said these programs are designed to help individuals process grief, build resilience and maintain meaningful connections, offering guidance and companionship during one of life’s most difficult transitions.
For those struggling with grief or loneliness this holiday season, NPHI said it encourages reaching out to a local hospice care provider. Many hospice and advanced illness organizations offer grief support services free of charge, including individual counseling, group sessions, educational resources and opportunities to connect with others through volunteer programs. During the holiday season, many NPHI members also offer events and services to support those who experience grief during the holidays.
