Competitive Bidding Expansion and Bundled Payments: What's Next for DME?
Andrea Stark, Reimbursement Consultant, MiraVista LLC
Track: Keeping It Legal; Location: C209

Stark hopes to enlighten attendees about the so-called “rural rollout” of competitive bidding. “It’s not that the competitive bidding contracting process is expanding,” she explains. “It’s similar to a national fee schedule reduction based on competitive bid pricing that is expanding nationwide.”

During her competitive bidding session, Stark will break down a real world example to help providers estimate the rollout’s impact before CMS actually produces their final fee schedule. “We will also touch on the two bundling programs that CMS has proposed that relates to power wheelchairs and CPAP,” she says. “What are some of the advantages and potential drawbacks of bundling?”

Denial Therapy
The approach behind Stark’s therapy session is to modify behavior in a way that allows providers to set aside their old ways of thinking and embrace something new, “because too many providers have an A/R that continues to bloom,” she says. “And one of the things that providers overlook is how much they contribute to that problem based on how they work denials, how they prioritize denials, and how they think about processes within the operation.

“We’re going to tackle some of the myths and legends about how we treat denials,” continues Stark. “We’ll consider a new way of mitigating our exposure to denial by working them differently, understanding the cause—that is the root of this ‘denial’ session.”
