OIG Recovers $3 Billion, Strike Force Expands

WASHINGTON — In its semi-annual report to Congress June
14, HHS’ Office of Inspector General said it expected $3 billion in
recoveries over the first six months of FY 2010, including $670
million in audit receivables and $2.5 billion in investigative
receivables. The OIG also reported exclusions of 1,935 individuals
and entities from participating in federal health care programs,
293 criminal actions and 164 civil actions.

Inspector General Daniel Levinson pointed to the success of the
Medicare Fraud Strike Force during the year’s first half, noting
charges against 119 individuals or entities, 42 convictions and $16
million in investigative receivables. The Strike Force is currently
operating in seven cities (Miami; Los Angeles; Detroit; Houston;
Brooklyn, N.Y.; Baton Rouge, La.; and Tampa, Fla.) and is expected
to expand to 13 additional locations.
