In a report released Aug. 19, the General Accountability Office (GAO) said CMS does not devote enough resources to state Medicaid anti-fraud efforts. According to the report, this year the agency dedicated only eight employees to oversee Medicaid anti-fraud programs nationwide. The report also said that CMS oversight of these programs is limited in scope.
The agency responded saying that it is improving efforts to ensure states combat fraud, adding that 65 staffers in regional offices review Medicaid expenditures, and, during fiscal 2004, the agency expects to hire 100 new Medicaid financial management staff.
