    Let the Rat Out of the Bag I am offended by [CMS Administrator Tom Scully’s] statement about pressuring the good guys to “rat” out the bad guys (“Q&A with Tom Scully,” HomeCare, October 2003). The good guys have been informing his office for months to years … about the situation in the Houston area. These complaints appear to have fallen on deaf ears until now. The squeeze they are putting on the good guys appears to be an attempt to reduce numbers in the Houston area instead of cleaning up the fraud and abuse.   • Drive Medical to Acquire Dr. K International

    Port Washington, N.Y. Drive Medical has agreed to acquire Los Angeles manufacturer Dr. K International Trading Co. This acquisition represents the fourth over the past two years. The company’s President and CEO Harvey Diamond said the acquisition “will enhance our presence throughout the United States by providing greater distribution capabilities on the West Coast, and a complementary product line to our existing product offering.” Drive will continue to manufacture the existing product lines for both companies, including wheelchairs, hospital beds, bath safety products, ambulatory aids, respiratory equipment and electrotherapy products.   • MP TotalCare Acquires Medical Holdings

    Tampa, Fla. Diabetes and respiratory product supplier MP TotalCare has acquired Lawrenceville, Ga.-based Medical Holdings, a supplier of urological products, incontinence supplies, diabetes products and testing supplies, mobility devices and ostomy supplies. Vance Wall, president of Medical Holdings, which operates under the name DS Medical, will join MP TotalCare as executive vice president.   • Byram Healthcare Completes Ostomy, Diabetes Purchases

    Milford, Conn. Byram Healthcare Centers has acquired the disposable supplies patient bases of three HME providers in western Connecticut, western Pennsylvania and Maryland. These acquisitions include a mix of diabetes, ostomy and urological patients. A Byram spokesperson said two of the three acquired companies asked to remain anonymous.     Franklin, Tenn. National Seating and Mobility has opened three new branch offices. A branch in El Dorado Springs, Mo., will serve clients throughout central Missouri, northwest Arkansas, Kansas and northeast Oklahoma. A Cranston, R.I., branch will serve the Providence region, and a Dunbar, W.Va., branch will serve the Charleston, W.Va., metropolitan area.   • Ultra Care Acquires CareMed Chicago Divisions

    Melrose Park, Ill. Ultra Care has purchased the home respiratory, infusion therapy and durable medical equipment divisions of CareMed Chicago, a not-for-profit affiliate of the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System. “The transaction represents an important step in our planned growth,” said Bruce H. Callahan, Ultra Care’s president and CEO, adding that the acquisition will increase the company’s annual gross revenue by more than 45 percent and increase its market share in the Chicago region.   • Product Innovation, Legislative Updates Draw 21,000 to Medtrade Show

    Atlanta Despite looming Medicare reform legislation and a moratorium on new supplier numbers, attendance was strong at Medtrade 2003, held Oct. 9-11 at the Georgia World Congress Center. The HME industry trade show drew more than 21,000 home medical equipment providers and other home health care professionals for the second straight year. Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., opened the show with an address to attendees at the American Association for Homecare’s “Washington Update,” sponsored by HomeCare.
