  • Redefining Rehab: New Rehab Coalition Forms

    An independent coalition of advocates has formed to address specific issues in the home medical equipment industry’s high-end rehabilitation sector. The National Coalition for Assistive and Rehab Technology (NCART) will provide highly focused attention to the needs of suppliers and manufacturers who concentrate primarily on dealing in high-end rehab and assistive technology products. Based in Washington, D.C., the new organization was, at press time, scheduled to be operational in early February, according to Rita Hostak, vice president of government relations for Sunrise Medical, Longmont, Colo.   • AmeriCare Partners with Trinity System Hospital

    Troy, Mich. Americare has entered into an agreement with St. Joseph Mercy, Macomb, a Trinity System hospital in Michigan, to provide respiratory and other health care-related management services to its discharged patients. “Home care companies must offer more than the typical routine products and services to compete,” the company said. AmeriCare President Greg Jamian pointed out that “as hospitals look to further cut cost, they are considering outsourcing operations that experienced, quality vendors can provide at a much lower price.” Company revenues for 2004 are expected to climb to $11.3 million.     Genesis Health Ventures Completes Spin-Off, Changes Name to NeighborCare: Kennett Square, Pa.-based Genesis Health Ventures (GHV) has completed the spin-off of its eldercare and rehabilitation businesses into a separate publicly traded company, Genesis HealthCare Corp., and has changed its name to NeighborCare. NeighborCare, an institutional pharmacy provider, also provides infusion therapy services, home medical equipment, respiratory therapy services and community-based retail pharmacies. The company serves 32 states and the District of Columbia. Adler realized that patients being discharged from his facility did not have appropriate home medical equipment. “I was loaning patients wheelchairs, commodes and walking aids … so I decided to address the need,” Adler explains.   • Walgreens Health Initiatives Acquires Pinnacle Home Care

    Deerfield, Ill. Walgreens Health Initiatives, through Walgreens Home Care, has acquired selected assets from the owners of Pinnacle Home Care, a home infusion business in San Antonio, Austin and Corpus Christi, Texas. “In addition to our comprehensive home care facility in Houston, this acquisition expands Walgreens Health Initiatives’ regional presence in Texas,” said Ron Allen, vice president of WHI’s home care division. “These new facilities initially will offer infusion services, and plans are in the works to introduce respiratory services and home medical equipment.” The company currently operates accredited home care facilities in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Texas and Wisconsin.   • FBI Conducts Investigation Of The Scooter Store

    New Braunfels, Texas The FBI interviewed about two dozen Scooter Store employees in late October, company and bureau officials confirm, raising additional concern in an HME sector already under heavy scrutiny from federal authorities. “We’re the nation’s leading provider [of powered mobility products]; we’re in an industry under scrutiny,” said Margaret McGuckin, executive vice president, marketing, for The Scooter Store. “It’s not surprising that they would want to talk to us.   • Former Apria Exec Joins Respiratory Products Firm

    Santa Barbara, Calif. Robert Fary, former director of respiratory services for Lake Forest, Calif.-based Apria Healthcare, has been named vice president of sales at Inogen, a respiratory products manufacturer that debuted its new oxygen concentration device, the Inogen One, at Medtrade in October. “The Inogen One is really a new category of oxygen device that is designed to be one solution for oxygen patients and providers. It is designed to take care of all oxygen needs by functioning as a stationary and portable [device] at the same time,” said Byron Myers, Inogen founder and product manager.
