    Alexandria, Va. After serving three years as the public face of the Ameri-can Association for Homecare, Tom Connaughton March 21 announced he will resign as president of the association, effective mid June, 2003. “This decision is indeed a bitter sweet one,” Connaughton told HomeCare. “I have loved working with this industry and with my staff, and I believe very strongly in the importance of this industry. However, an opportunity has arisen in a company that I have represented in the past, and, at this time in my career, it’s something that I want to do.” In his new position — at the helm of a medical manufacturer’s Washington office — Connaughton likely will not address home care issues, he said.     A Great Journey I enjoyed the January 2003 issue of HomeCare and the recognition that you gave to me personally for my industry participation over the last 25 years. It was a great journey for those of us who are now watching from the sidelines. The chart on page 49, titled “Top Companies of 2002,” was a mystery to me. The footnote claims the rankings are in “Millions of revenues.” However, the numbers do not match the rankings. Lincare is the most profitable company in the industry, while Apria remains the firm with the greater revenues. Praxair is number three, but appears to have the greatest revenues.     Financials: Chad Announces Third Quarter Results: For the third quarter ended Dec. 31, 2002, Chatsworth, Calif.-based Chad Therapeutics reported a net income of $228,000, or 2 cents per diluted share, compared to a net income of $81,000, or 1 cent per diluted share, for the same quarter the previous fiscal year. Revenue for the quarter rose 6 percent, to $4.9 million, compared to revenue of $4.7 million for the same quarter the previous fiscal year.     Noteworthy PSAI Chief Needs Pay Cut, Shareholder Group Says: Pediatric Services of America’s chief executive officer, Joseph Sansone, must take a salary cut to keep his job, according to a group of shareholders led by David Nierenberg, a shareholder who holds a large interest in the Norcross, Ga.-based company. In a letter to PSAI Chairman Edward Wissing, the shareholder group — which has a 14 percent stake in the company — said that CEO compensation must be driven only by corporate performance and the creation of shareholder value. The PSAI board of directors recently approved a $200,000 2002 cash bonus for Sansone, which the group is asking be eliminated in 2003, along with an $80,000 automobile allowance.     Financials Respironics Announces Second Quarter Financials: Respironics, based in Murrysville, Pa., reported a net income of $13.8 million, or 40 cents per diluted share, for the second quarter ended Dec. 31, 2002. This represents a 38 percent increase, compared to a net income of $10.0 million, or 32 cents per diluted share, for the same quarter the previous fiscal year.   • The Future Looks Bright

    Today’s home medical equipment providers are a hardy bunch, to say the least. Despite facing in 2002 an economy that was leveled alongside the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, and in 2003 the looming threat of national competitive bidding for durable medical equipment and an inherent-reasonableness regulation, HME providers remain optimistic about the industry. According to HomeCare‘s annual Forecast Survey, HME providers continue to predict increased revenue for 2003. Of the 374 providers who responded to this year’s survey, only 3 percent expect their companies’ revenue to decrease, while 10 percent expect revenue to remain static, and a whopping 84 percent forecast increased revenue. Of those who predicted a revenue increase, more than one-third foresee an increase of between 6 percent and 10 percent, and…
