PHOENIX, Ariz. (November 1, 2019)—SPORTS ‘N SPOKES, the sports and recreation magazine of the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), Abilities Expo and Cure Medical, a manufacturer of intermittent catheters, are proud to announce the four grand prize winners of the popular Wheels UP! accessible travel photo contest that took place in August.

2019 Wheels UP! Photo Contest Winners

First Place: Richard Corbett
Atlanta native Richard Corbett, founder of the Wheels2Walking YouTube channel, submitted this year’s winning photo of himself working out at the Original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, California. As the grand prize winner, Corbett lands the front cover of the November 2019 SPORTS `N SPOKES and will receive five issues of November 2019 SPORTS `N SPOKES magazine and a $1,000 Southwest Airlines E-Gift Card courtesy of Cure Medical.

Second Place: David Nickelson
Nickelson’s photo features him off-roading along the rim of the Grand Canyon in Yellowstone National Park. His photo will appear in the November 2019 SPORTS `N SPOKES Final Frame. He will also receive three issues of the November 2019 SPORTS `N SPOKES magazine and a $1,000 gift card from AMS Vans.

Third Place: Adrienne Terrell
Terrell’s photo shows her on top of the world as she explores the Mogollon Rim with her family. Her photo will appear in the “Someone You Should Know” segment on sportsnspokes.com, plus she will receive two issues of the November 2019 SPORTS `N SPOKES magazine and a $200 gift card from At Home Medical.

Honorable Mention Winner: Austin Martin
Martin’s photo captures his sit skiing adventure during a recent trip to Holiday Valley in New York. His photo will appear on sportsnspokes.com social media pages, and he will receive one issue of the November 2019 SPORTS `N SPOKES plus an EZ-Access portable folding ramp (a $300 value), courtesy of Cure Medical.

Now in its ninth year, the 2019 Wheels UP! accessible travel event featured a photo contest and prize giveaways for participants. As part of the event, SPORTS ‘N SPOKES, Abilities Expo and Cure Medical social media pages shared daily photos of people who use wheelchairs enjoying accessible vacation spots, outdoors programs and other activities. The goal of the whole campaign is to encourage thousands of people with disabilities to explore their world through accessible travel and adaptive sports. A team of celebrity judges selected the winning photos from the Wheels UP! event, lending their unique perspectives and trained eye to the contest. Photo judges included:

  • Ms. Wheelchair California 2005 and Vantage Mobility International (VMI) representative Kristina Rhoades
  • Cure Medical founder and former Reeve Foundation Board Member Bob Yant

  • Able Outdoors Magazine founder and quadriplegic Chad Waligura
