  • Ready for the Challenge

The home care industry is facing many challenges in 2004 due to enactment of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act (MMA). The American Association for Homecare is well prepared. We have developed an action plan to ensure that policy-makers hear our message to preserve access to high-quality home care equipment and services. And we are putting our strategy in place, a multi-pronged approach that entails concerted efforts on Capitol Hill, in the administration and federal agencies, at the state level and in the public arena. Relationship Building Since passage of the new law, Capitol Hill and the administration have been in an “Okay, how do we move forward now?” mode. There have been lots of personnel changes in Washington, as is always the…

  • 10 Merchandising and Design DO’s for Home Care Retail

The philosophy of designing a contemporary, successful home health care store is based on addres-sing the kind of image that today’s home medical equipment providers want to convey. Stores should communicate caring, warmth, convenience and information — all the things that customers are depending on you to provide. • CMS Issues Home Health Market Report

Baltimore The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Health Care Industry Market Update, its first since June 2002, reveals that American home health spending totaled $45.3 billion in 2001, with the home health agency segment accounting for $33.2 billion. The remaining annual expenditures came from respiratory therapy at $4.5 billion; infusion therapy, $4.7 billion; and DME, $2.9 billion. Among other findings, the study calls the respiratory therapy market “very fragmented,” with more than 2,000 local providers making up half the market, but says that large respiratory and infusion therapy companies show strong operational and financial performance. Where strategic and attractively priced targets are available, these companies are actively consolidating the industry. The full report is available at www.cms.hhs.gov/reports/hcimu/default.asp.
