    While the challenges facing the home medical community remain daunting, I am more convinced than ever that our industry has the ability to survive and thrive in the coming years—but only if we continue to work together as we have this past year. 2015 started off with a significant legislative win on the competitive bidding program, as we passed binding bid legislation that will help keep less-serious bidders from artificially depressing bid prices, and will require winning bidders to fulfill their obligations. Even getting common-sense and budget-neutral legislation like this passed required extensive D.C.-based and grassroots lobbying efforts spanning two congressional sessions, before finally passing as part of a package of health care legislation and being signed into law in April.     As Congress begins to wrap up the legislative session for the year, our industry priorities are well positioned for advancement. While at press time we do not know what the final outcome will be, based on regular communications with our legislative champions we have done what they asked in order to put our priorities in the best possible position to move on a must-pass bill in early December. Efforts to apply congressional pressure on Medicare to make changes on their own have been significant from both the House and Senate.   • Decoding CMS Referral Data

    In early October, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released new data which provides a wealth of information related to durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS) provided to Medicare beneficiaries via referrals from physicians and other health care professionals. The 2013 data set is called, “The Referring Provider Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS) Public Use File” and is part of CMS’s Medicare Provider Utilization and Payment Data set. The new data includes information on 385,915 referring providers, more than 100 million claims and $11 billion in Medicare allowed payments for calendar year 2013. The data is posted on the CMS website at cms.gov/research-statistics-data-and-systems/statistics-trends-and-reports/medicare-provider-charge-data/dme.html.     Re-enrollment in Medicare is often one of those activities conducted during the fall. The industry has been told that CMS is revising the 855-S form that suppliers use for Medicare program enrollment and re-enrollment in order to better align the accreditation product categories that list the DME items pharmacies and suppliers provide. We have not seen the revised form yet, but we are expecting it to be released at any time. Prescribers and PECOS Enrollment It has been three years since the first prescribers were enrolled in PECOS and the system went live. Now it is time for PECOS re-enrollment.
