FDA Issues Alert on Counterfeit Blood Glucose Test Strips

WASHINGTON–The FDA issued a warning that counterfeit blood
glucose test strips, intended for use with Lifescan’s OneTouch
blood glucose monitors, were distributed nationwide. The
counterfeit test strips could give wrong blood glucose values, the
FDA said, causing patients to take the wrong amount of insulin,
which could lead to injury or death. The FDA said it hasn’t
received any such reports.

The counterfeit test strips are the One Touch Basic/Profile (lot
numbers 272894A, 2619932 and 2606340) and the One Touch Ultra (lot
number 2691191).

The counterfeit test strips were distributed primarily in Ohio,
New York, Florida, Maryland and Missouri. They were distributed by
Medical Plastic Devices, Quebec, Canada, and Champion Sales,
Brooklyn, N.Y.

Consumers who have the counterfeit test strips should stop using
them and contact their doctor, the FDA said.

The FDA said it is investigating the matter, which was brought
to its attention by LifeScan, a Johnson & Johnson company.
