    Sweet Success

In the shadow of Universal Studios, a few short blocks from the streets where stars like Jane Wyman and John Wayne made names for themselves, sits a community drugstore that caters to North Hollywood’s less visible residents — the Hispanic, Russian and African American citizens who have made Tinsel Town their home. PX Drugstore has served this neighborhood for more than 27 years, staying true to a concept that keeps the store from going the way of silent movies: “We keep track of what’s going on in our community,” says Jeff Willard, PX’s home health coordinator. Editor’s Note: The recent federal crackdown on power wheelchair fraud sparked an outpouring of response from many HomeCare readers. The following letters represent two perspectives on the issue. Discovery of Fraud and Abuse an Achievement, Not an Embarrassment In your Aug. 25 article (“PMC Commends Fraud Crackdown,” HomeCare Monday), the opening paragraph included the phrase “threatened to tarnish the HME industry’s reputation at this critical juncture.” This [phrase] absolutely drives me crazy! It is well known that fraud and abuse related to [power] wheelchairs and scooters is rampant in our industry. The problem is that we are not tough enough to police ourselves. The fact that we have to kowtow to legislative efforts to rein in Med i-care costs at this time by making concessions...

    Doc Says Expand Medicare Coverage

Boston An article in the Aug. 13 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association proposed extending Medicare to cover uninsured people age 55 and older. Expanding Medicare eligibility in this way would serve a “very vulnerable population” that wants to protect its health but does not have the resources to do so, said author Michael McWilliams, a medical resident at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. By 2015, Americans aged 55 to 64 will make up nearly 20 percent of the U.S. population, the article predicted.
