The HHS Office of Inspector General plans to keep a close eye on HME spending next year. In its 2006 Work Plan, the agency outlined a number of HME-related issues that it intends to investigate, including:
- Medicare payments for therapeutic footwear;
- medical necessity of durable medical equipment;
- Medicare pricing of equipment and supplies;
- home blood glucose testing supplies;
- durable medical equipment payments for beneficiaries receiving home health services;
- Medicare drug reimbursement of average sales price;
- collecting and maintaining average sales price data;
- effectiveness of ASP cost controls;
- monitoring of market prices for Part B drugs; and
- duplicate payments for Part B drugs under the competitive acquisition program.
