OIG Says Medicare, Medicaid Work Shows Big ROI

WASHINGTON — In its Annual Performance Report for FY 2008, HHS’
Office of
Inspector General said the return on investment for its
expenditures related to the Medicare and Medicaid programs was $17
for every $1 spent in the three-year period from 2006 through
2008.

Taking into account other programs in addition to Medicare and
Medicaid — OIG looks at more than 300 programs administered
by HHS with a staff of 1,500 — the report said $2.4 billion
was returned to the government in 2008 as a result of OIG
investigations, and audit work returned an additional $1.3
billion.
