Rounding the Corner
You will recall that in the fall of 2011, Penton Media was preparing to shut down publication of HomeCare magazine. Having recently launched Senior Care Products, the president of Cahaba Media Group, Walter B. Evans, Jr., decided to purchase the title, with the two magazines forming the core of a newly established Health Care Division (in addition to the existing Industrial Division). When I joined CMG last spring I was tasked with shifting HomeCare’s traditional focus on legislation and industry trends to a targeted approach to best business practices: in other words, how to survive in an environment that was quickly shifting from a reimbursement-based model to one relying more on retail sales. In light of the recent news from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on a 45-percent plunge in Round 2 payment rates, that decision seems more prescient than ever.
